Prostatic Cells

Prostatic Hyperplasia: Wright's stain, 400x

A sample of the prostate can be obtained by lavage or needle aspiration. This sample was obtained by lavage from an intact male dog suffering from prostatic hyperplasia. Hyperplasia is a benign lesion, such that the cytological appearance of  the cell population will be relatively uniform, as seen in this microphotograph. Due to the cells’ epithelial nature they will form clusters that can be easily observed during microscopic examination. In order to further explore this characteristic of epithelial cells as seen in cytology click here.
