Toxic Neutrophils
Wright's Stain, 1000x |
Cytoplasmic basophilia Increased cytoplasmic basophilia together with the appearance of or increased frequency of Döhle bodies are the first "toxic" changes to appear in association with increased granulocytopoiesis, generally associated with an inflammatory reaction. Two other changes are increased basophilic granulation in the cytoplasm (uncommonly seen) and vacuolation in the presence of endotoxemia. This segmented neutrophil shows increased cytoplasmic basophilia. |
