Struvite Crystals (magnesium ammonium phosphate)

Struvites, 100x

Struvites, 400x

Struvites are found frequently in the urine of domestic species. It is normal for these to be found in trace amounts in the urinary sediment. However, when they are found in large quantities, their presence is significant and compatible with urolithiasis. These crystals are not always associated with the presence of urinary tract infection. Struvites are formed in alkaline urine such that an element of therapy is nutrition that will allow for the acidification of urine allowing dissolution of the crystals.

Though struvite crystals may vary in appearance, they are generally square to rectangular in shape.  They have a three-dimensional appearance, and may resemble the roof of a house or a coffin-lid.
