Normal corneal cells comprise cylindrical cells with an elongated to slightly polygonal appearance. These cells possess a single nucleus of uniform appearance, in which a small, central nucleolus may sometimes be visible. The nucleus to cytoplasm ratio is variable, but is most often high. The nucleus is also often eccentric. Corneal scrapings can also contain squamous cells.
